How to Make a Cold Call for a Networking Meeting
How to Make a Cold Call for a Networking MeetingHow to Make a Cold Call for a Networking MeetingThe thought of making a cold call, which is an unsolicited phone call, as part of your career networking strategy makes most people cringe. But youve got nothing to lose by being brave and trying to make a few calls. When done carefully and professionally, cold calling can help you togrow your career and get hired for your next job. There is no doubt that career networking works. Its one of the key ways job seekers get hired. Your network of professional contacts, college and university connections, and personal friends and family can help you get your next job. Its not only the people you know well - or at all - who can be instrumental in aiding your job search. Your broader network is importanttoo. What can be difficult is figuring out who to ask for helpand how. Prepare a Pitch Before You Call How you reach out to contactsinyourwidernetworkis one of the most important factors impact ing the success of your job search.Reaching out to individuals who dont know youwell and capturing their attention can be particularly challenging. Preparing a pitch that will encourage the person youre contacting to meet with you is an important first step. You may need to sell them on why they should take the time to help you. You can make it easier for them by asking for just a few minutes of their time and being clear that youre onlyrequesting advice, notajob. Emphasizing a common thread linking you to the contact can make it even more likely that the person will be motivated to speak with you or meet you. It can be easy to send an email or LinkedIn message, and thats afine firststep. However, a phone call isnt as easily ignored as an email, and it can be amoreeffective way to beginbuilding a relationship with your contact. 10 Quick Tips to Make a Cold Call for a Networking Meeting 1. Make every effort to generate referrals and solid leads. Good prospects include LinkedIn co nnections, former supervisors and coworkers, college faculty and classmates, family contacts, members of professional groups, fellow parishioners, neighbors, and everyone you can think of who might be able to help. 2. Senda message in advance to help make your contact more receptive to your call.Send an email or LinkedIn message with some of the information mentioned here. You can include a resume as long as you mention something like I have attached my resume to makeiteasierfor you to advise me.Mention that you will call to explore the possibility of arranging an informational consultation.Heres an example of a letter requesting career advice. 3. Practice a brief introduction or elevator pitch prior to your call. Beginby mentioning how you identified the person as a kompetenzprofil contact. If you were referred by one of their contacts, you should lead with that information. You might write I am reaching out to you upon the suggestion of John Smith. John thought that you could prov ide valuable feedback regarding how bestto frame my background for jobs in college admissions.Review these tips for writing an elevator pitch. 4. Mention how you are connected. If you havent been referred to yourcontact, part of your leading statement should include a reference to any commonality in your backgrounds. For example, you might mention that you attended the same college, belong to the same professional association, participated in online discussions for the same group, or grew up in the same area. 5. Your introduction should also include a clear statement regarding what you are requesting from the individual. The type of advice you request might include insights on how to position your background for opportunities in their sector, roles that might be suitable given your skill set, feedback on your resume, or perspective on trends in their field. 6. Ask for help and advice, not for an interview. With cold contacts, your reason for reaching out to the individual should be f or advice and to arrange a consultation. You should never ask a potential networking contact (who doesnt know you yet) to get you an interview. 7. Your initial statement should convey three or four assets that make their sector a logical area for you to explore. For example, you might say I am investigating roles inwhich I can apply my passion for writing and editing, and my fascination with digital media. 9. When logistically possible, ask for the opportunity to meet face-to-face before you end your call. If you represent yourself well at in-person meetings, youll be more likely to generate referrals for interviews or further networking opportunities.Suggest a meeting at their workplace so youll gain a clearer sense of the work environment. You also might receive introductions to colleagues while youre there. Heres how to make your networking meeting a success. 10. Follow up your call with a thank you communication expressing gratitude for any advice received. Provide any additional information that might help your contact to gain a further appreciation of your background. Include a link to a personal website or LinkedIn profile that contains work samples and recommendations.Review this list of thank you letter examples for a variety of circumstances. Even a genius has to sell himself the resume of Leonardo da Vinci
Even a genius has to sell himself the resume of Leonardo da VinciEven a genius has to sell himself the resume of Leonardo da VinciBefore he was famous, before he painted the Mona Lisa and the Last Supper, before he invented the helicopter, before he drew the fruchtwein famous image of man, before he was all of these things, Leonardo da Vinci was an armorer, a weapons guy, a maker of things that go boom. And, like you, he had to put together a resume to get his next gig. So in 1482, at the age of 30, he wrote out a letter and a list of his capabilities and sent it off to Ludovico il Moro, Duke of Milan. So to celebrate Leonardos birthday last week, Id like to share his wonderful resume with you.The translation of this letter is quite remarkableMost Illustrious Lord, Having now sufficiently considered the specimens of all those who proclaim themselves skilled contrivers of instruments of war, and that the invention and operation of the said instruments are nothing different from those in common use I shall endeavor, without prejudice to any one else, to explain myself to your Excellency, showing your Lordship my secret, and then offering them to your best pleasure and approbation to work with effect at opportune moments on all those things which, in part, shall be briefly noted below. I have a sort of extremely light and strong bridges, adapted to be most easily carried, and with them you may pursue, and at any time flee from the enemy and others, secure and indestructible by fire and battle, easy and convenient to lift and distribution policy. Also methods of burning and destroying those of the enemy.I know how, when a place is besieged, to take the water out of the trenches, and make endless variety of bridges, and covered ways and ladders, and other machines pertaining to such expeditions.3. If, by reason of the height of the banks, or the strength of the place and its position, it is impossible, when besieging a place, to avail oneself of the plan of bombardmen t, I have methods for destroying every rock or other fortress, even if it were founded on a rock, etc.Again, I have kinds of mortars most convenient and easy to carry and with these I can fling small stones almost resembling a storm and with the smoke of these cause great terror to the enemy, to his great detriment and confusion. And if the fight should be at sea I have kinds of many machines most efficient for offense and defense and vessels which will resist the attack of the largest guns and powder and fumes.I have means by secret and tortuous mines and ways, made without noise, to reach a designated spot, even if it were needed to pass under a trench or a river.I will make covered chariots, safe and unattackable, which, entering among the enemy with their artillery, there is no body of men so great but they would break them. And behind these, infantry could follow quite unhurt and without any hindrance. In case of need I will make big guns, mortars, and light ordnance of fine and useful forms, out of the common type.Where the operation of bombardment might fail, I would contrive catapults, mangonels, trabocchi, and other machines of marvellous efficacy and not in common use. And in short, according to the variety of cases, I can contrive various and endless means of offense and defense. In times of peace I believe I can give perfect satisfaction and to the equal of any other in architecture and the composition of buildings public and private and in guiding water from one place to another.I can carry out sculpture in marble, bronze, or clay, and also I can do in painting whatever may be done, as well as any other, be he who he may. Again, the bronze horse may be taken in hand, which is to be to the immortal glory and eternal honor of the prince your father of happy memory, and of the illustrious house of Sforza. And if any of the above-named things seem to anyone to be impossible or not feasible, I am most ready to make the experiment in your park, or in whate ver place may please your Excellency to whom I comment myself with the utmost humility, etc. What a fantastic piece of personal marketing Theres none of his famous backwards-mirror writing here - this letter was intended to be read and to persuade.Heres what I think we can learn from Leonardos resumeYoull notice he doesnt recite past achievements. He doesnt mention the painting of the altarpiece for the Chapel of St Bernard he doesnt provide a laundry list of past bombs hes built he doesnt cite his prior employment in artist Andrea di Ciones studio. No, he does none of these things, because those would be about his achievements, not the Dukes needs.Instead, he sells his prospective employer on what Leonardo can do for him.Now imagine being the Duke of Milan and receiving this magnificent letter from the young prodigy of Florence. The specific descriptives paint a vivid picture of siege engines and bombardments and mortars and trench-draining and bridges to defeat the enemy. You can imagine the scenes that ran through the Dukes head as he held this letter in his hands and read through Leonardo da Vincis bold statements of capabilities. What Renaissance Duke wouldnt want kinds of mortars most convenient and easy to carry that can fling small stones almost resembling a storm? Sounds pretty enticing. And thats exactly what your resume needs to do, too. Not the laundry list / voreingestellt bio that talks about you, but the marketing piece that talks about the benefits to your future employer and how you fit into his or her needs and desires.Ladders Resume, our free tool, can help you be (almost) as persuasive. So it turns out that even on his 565th birthday, this remarkable fellow Leonardo da Vinci is teaching us about the future. What a genius.Heres wishing you an illustrious week, ReadersAs the Italians might saySto tifo per te(Im rooting for you),

One of the biggest challenges in almost all industries today is achieving gender parity. Gender diversity provides huge benefits in the workplace. pWhile some industries have made significant advancements in gender diversity, some industries lag further behind... and the construction industry is well-known for being in the latter category. If someone says, construction workers, youll likely picture a group of men in yellow hard hats analyzing an architects plans or laying bricks on top of a scaffold. And men at work s igns only help to reinforce this image.pThis stereotype is rooted in reality. When was the last time you actually spotted a woman on a construction site? Or hired a female plumber or carpenter? Your answer is most likely never. In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statisticsreports that only 3.4% of the total of 8.3 million construction employees are women.pBut the construction industry has a lot more to offer than steel-toed boots and hard hats, and it needs women to help advance the industry in this era of rapid change. Here are 5 reasons why women joining the workforce or looking to make a pivot should consider a career in construction.h21. Fuel Innovation/h2pNot only is diversity the socially and morally right thing to do, but it is also actually an excellent business strategy. pResearch presented in the Harvard geschftlicher umgang Reviewshows that diverse teams develop more innovative ideas. This is further supported by a study conducted by Gallupon the performance of gender-diverse t eams versus single-gender teams, which found that the difference in backgrounds and perspectives led to better business performance and problem-solving. h22. Capitalize on Demand/h2pThe construction industry is currently experiencing a labor shortage. The industry itself is booming and projected to be one of the fastest-growing industries, with total spending projected to exceed $1.45 trillion in 2023/a. However, most construction companies are unable to meet the rising demand. pAccording to the Associated General Contractors of America/a, more than 80% of contractors are experiencing difficulties filling hourly craft positions that represent the bulk of the construction workforce.pAnd demand isnt limited to individual contributor roles. Given the industry boom, there are a number of open stable and high-paying roles (any project managers out there?) waiting for the right candidateh23. Leadership Opportunities/h2pAccording to the Bureau of Labor Statistics/a, women compose only 7.7% of the total 1 million managerial positions in construction.br/pBut given the highly collaborative nature of construction work, more women in leadership roles would help drive innovation and enhance productivity.Furthermore, as a woman in construction in a leadership position, youd have the unique opportunity to drive change for the industry and make it a more attractive option for other women.h24. High-Income Potential/h2pSalaries for many skilled positions in construction are on the rise, making a construction career a prime choice for women looking for a high-paying job,pThe 2018 Construction Craft Salary Surveyconducted by the National Center for Construction Education and Research revealed that salaries for many skilled craft areas are increasing. Project managers and project supervisors topped the list at $92,523 and $88,355, respectively. The next set of highest-paying jobs include those of combo welders ($71,067), instrumentation technicians ($70,080), pipe welders ($69,222 ), power line workers ($68,262) and industrial electricians ($67,269). Of the 32 categories of workers in the survey, 19 positions earned an average salary of $60,000 or higher.h25. Sense of accomplishment/h2p The construction industry can give employees a unique sense of achievement. Yes, the job is stressful and the work can be demanding, but nothing beats the feeling of being able to build something from the ground up. pHow many professionals in other industries can point at a school, a hospital, or a skyscraper and say I helped build that?pThe construction industry has a long way to go in combating gender bias and supporting women in the workforce, but given the current demand for workers, theres no better time to pick up a sledgehammer (figurative or literal) and smash the gender stereotypes plaguing the construction industry.
